E-Challan in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is the first city in India to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage city back in 2017. Currently, more than a million vehicles are registered in the city. It covers an area of 466 sq km, and as per an article in 2022, there are 714 vehicles per square kilometre in Ahmedabad. Further, Ahmedabad RTO (GJ-01) was among the first Regional Transport Offices in India to adopt the Smart Card Driving License system.

With a much-increased density of vehicles, E-Challan in Ahmedabad has gained traction since the onset of “One Nation, One Challan” back in 2024. Currently, there are 4 ways that the Ahmedabad city police can issue an E-challan to you, and the tale does not end here, as the city police are planning to add two more ways to issue E-challans, making it more autonomous. The same are mentioned in the following section.

E-challan is a system wherein traffic police personnel or the traffic system generates/initiates an automatic online challan, which will be issued to the violator with the details and amount of payment directly. Further, the violator is expected to pay the sum or amount generally within a prescribed period.

As discussed above, there are four ways that the Ahmedabad city police can issue you an E-challan, which are as below:

1. CCTV system at major crossroads
2. E-challans are issued by head constables and above-rank officers on the spot
3. Speed-gun system on interceptor vans
4. VoC application

Via the VoC application, the traffic constables can take a picture of the violator and submit it to a centralised system, whereupon, after checking it, the E-challan will be issued. The fifth and sixth way is a dashboard camera (Dashcam) on police patrol vehicles and the installation of speed cameras on the Sarkhej–Gandhinagar Highway.

To check your E-challan status, you can either use the Parivahan website or the Ahmedabad city police website. Let us go through the steps to check your E-challan status in Ahmedabad:

First Option: Check on Parivahan’s website.

1. Visit the Parivahan’s website ⇒ E-challan section ⇒ E-challan status
2. Fill in Challan Number/Vehicle Number/DL Number along with the Captcha below
3. Your E-challan details will show up along with the violation and fine amount
4. If everything is ok, you can proceed to pay

Second option: Ahmedabad’s E-challan website.

1. Visit the Ahmedabad traffic police website
2. Fill in the Challan number received by you via SMS or e-mail along with captcha verification
3. The E-challan violation will show up along with the violation fine
4. Fill in your Phone number and subsequent OTP to proceed to pay

As per the Ahmedabad traffic police E-challan website disclaimer. Payment of E-challan issued after 15.01.2023 is to be made on Parivahan’s website. If you want to receive an E-challan via SMS, you need to visit ⇒ Parivahan website ⇒ Online services ⇒ vehicle vehicle-related services, and update your mobile number to receive details.

Below are the steps to pay E-challan fines online in Ahmedabad through Parivahan website:

1. Visit the Parivahan’s E-challan section ⇒ E-challan status
2. Fill the Challan Number/Vehicle Number/DL Number along with the Captcha below
3. Your E-challan details will show up along with the violation and fine amount
4. Select your preferred mode of payment among UPI, Net Banking, Credit card / Debit Card, etc
5. Fill in the respective payment mode details
6. Wait to receive the payment successful page
7. Click the image or download the receipt

Alternatively, for fines issued before 15.01.2023, you can pay via the city police’s portal with the help of the steps below:

1. Visit the Ahmedabad traffic police website
2. Fill in the Challan number received by you via SMS or e-mail along with captcha verification
3. The E-challan violation will show up along with the violation fine
4. Fill in your Phone number and subsequent OTP
5. The payment portal will show up, where you can select from various options such as Net Banking, Card payment and UPI
6. Fill in the required details and OTP for the selected payment method

Below are the payment methods you can use while paying E-Challan fines in Bangalore:

1. UPI (Google Pay, Paytm, PhonePe, and it supports the Bank’s UPI interface)
2. Debit/Credit card
3. Net Banking
4. Cash

I have received an E-challan dated - (dd/mm/yyyy) for the so and so violation. My vehicle registration number is XXXXXX, and I am writing to you in case of wrongful e-challan allocation to my vehicle.

The offence and its monetary liability do not pertain to me since I haven’t crossed the speed limit/the mentioned violation, and I am sure of my claim. Kindly re-check the system which generated my challan number -XXXX and re-assess the E-challan to provide me relief/waiver for the same. Your swift action and timely response are highly appreciated.

Write a letter and submit it to your nearest traffic police station. You can use the above format for the letter as well.

• Parivahan e-Challan Grievance System:

1. Visit the Grievance System on the Parivahan portal
2. Fill in the required details, including your name, phone number, email address, challan number, vehicle or driving license number, and the state where the challan was issued
3. Select the specific issue related to your challan from the provided options
4. Describe your issue in detail and submit the form

The following steps can be undertaken to avoid getting an E-challan in Ahmedabad:

• Stick to the left lane and leave the right lane for faster traffic

• Don't weave through traffic; stick to your lane

• Never overtake on the left

• Wear a helmet for your safety

• Don't push your way forward through any opening in the traffic at traffic signals

• 2 stroke engines are big polluters because of carbon monoxide emissions. Keep your engine tuned

• Do not overspeed

• Do not use the horn unnecessarily

Ahmedabad city is known for its historic relevance, food, and antique lifestyle, with the Sabarmati riverfront as a major tourist attraction. Driving literacy and etiquette are less likely to be seen as you drive more and more in the city. The E-challans are a powerful tool to crack down and help us understand frequent violations. This data can help us take measures for the short term, but a long-term solution is still in question. Initiatives, rallies, awareness and campaigns are needed, yet something needs to be changed in behaviour from the roots of citizens because, as we know, it's better to arrive alive rather than having ‘late’ as a prefix to our names.
