While driving or riding on the roads of India, one must abide by the traffic rules and regulations laid down, to ensure safety and security of not only you, but also those around you. Sometimes, people ignore these set rules and this could lead to a violation. In order to monitor these violations and issue tickets online, Hyderabad RTO has started using the e-Challan system in the city.

An e-Challan is an electronic version of the traditional challan. This system makes the entire process digital and transparent. Challans are issued digitally through handheld devices of the traffic cops in Hyderabad. Simultaneously, e-Challans are issued through CCTVs spread across the city. This system has enabled the traffic cops to monitor and issue challans easily in the city. E-Challans are issued for traffic violations like signal jumping, overspeeding, not wearing seat belts/helmets, etc. Along with these, carrying documents like driving licence, two wheeler or four wheeler insurance policy, PUC, RC, are also important to avoid getting e-Challans.

The e-Challan system is a complete digital process and works in this way:

• CCTVs are installed across the city to monitor on-going traffic. These CCTVs are mainly located at signals and highways.
• If a violation is captured through these CCTV, the footage is saved for a traffic cop to inspect.
• Once a traffic inspector inspects the evidence, they determine if a violation has occurred and issue an e-Challan accordingly.
• Similarly, traffic cops have handheld devices that can be used to issue an e-Challan.
• Once an e-Challan is issued, the offender vehicle owner gets an SMS through their registered number.
• They can check these e-Challan online through various sites and settle the fine online itself
• Once the fine is settled, the violator can save a copy of the receipt.

In Hyderabad, in order to check e-Challan status online you can visit the Parivahan website or the Telangana Police Department website. Similarly, you can check your e-Challan status through UPI apps like PayTM and Gpay.

Through Telangana Police Department Portal

• Visit TS Police Department e-Challan Portal.
• Enter your vehicle number.
• Enter the captcha.
• Click on “Go”
• You will be redirected to a page where you can see your e-Challan status

Through Parivahan Portal

• Visit the Parivahan e-Challan Website.
• Click on "Check Challan Status."
• Enter your Challan Number/Vehicle Number/Driving licence Number.
• Fill in the Captcha Code and click "Get Detail."
• The system will show any pending challans with payment options.

After checking your e-Challan status online using Vehicle registration number or Driving Licence, you can pay the fine online through the same portals by:

Through TS Police Department Portal

• Visit TS Police Department e-Challan Portal.
• Enter your vehicle number.
• Enter the captcha.
• Click on “Go”
• From the list of e-Challans on the screen, select the e-Challan against which you want to make payment.
• Pay the fine online through internet banking or debit/credit cards
• Download / Print the receipt if required (You can check it later in payment history as well).

Through Parivahan Portal

• Visit the Parivahan e-Challan Website.
• Click on "Check Challan Status."
• Enter your Challan Number/Vehicle Number/Driving licence Number.
• Fill in the Captcha Code and click "Get Detail."
• Select the pending e-Challan you want to make payment against
• Pay the fine online through internet banking or debit/credit cards
• Download / Print the receipt if required.
• You can also make e-Challan payments through UPI apps like Gpay and PayTM.

If you wish to pay e-Challan fines offline, you can do so by:

• Paying the traffic cop who issued e-Challan on the spot. Make sure to collect a receipt if paid through cash.
• Visiting Hyderabad RTO to pay the fine: If you wish to visit the RTO to pay the fine, get a print of e-Challan and a cheque/DD to pay the fine at the RTO. You can also pay through cash or UPI. Make sure you take a receipt if you are paying offline.

In case, e-Challan issued to you is false/unfair, you can challenge the e-Challan through the Parivahan website, going to the Hyderabad RTO or taking the matter to the court. Follow these steps to challenge a wrong e-Challan in Hyderabad:

• Collect evidence to prove your innocence if necessary.
• Contact traffic police through their helpline number: 0120-2459171
• You can also file a complaint by emailing helpdesk-echallan@gov.in.
• You can also file a complaint on e-Challan website
• Provide all the required details in the above mentioned website and select your issue
• If they find your information relevant and you are innocent, e-Challan will be cancelled.
• If this process does not resolve your issue, you can move to court to contest the citation given.

Once you paid your e-Challan fine online in Hyderabad, you will be given a transaction number. You can use this number to check your transaction status and verify your receipt by:

• Visit Vahan Citizen Services Portal
• Click on “Verify Receipt"
• Enter your vehicle registration number, state and RTO.
• Enter your transaction number on the next page.
• Click on search and you will be displayed the receipt for your transaction of e-Challan paid.

The best way to avoid an e-Challan is not making any traffic violations in Hyderabad. Following basic rules will help you avoid e-Challan in Hyderabad. These rules include:

• Do not drink and drive
• Overtake only from the right side
• Drive on the left side
• Give proper indicators while turning
• Do not use phone while driving
• Follow traffic signal
• Avoid overspeeding
• Give way to emergency vehicles
• Keep required documents with you or stored in Digilocker (DL, RC, PUC, Insurance)
