E Challan Surat

Surat, a city in the state of Gujarat, is one of the leading and growing cities in India. With factors like growing vehicle population, metro constructions, trade vehicles, traffic of Surat has skyrocketed over the years. This has led to an increase in traffic violations, accidents, etc in the city. To overcome this obstacle Surat traffic department has introduced the e-Challan system in the city of Surat.

An e-Challan or an electronic challan is a digital version of the standard challan that is issued to a traffic violator (Like someone carrying an expired insurance or driving licence). It is an electronic ticketing system that will issue a ticket online to any violator in the city of Surat. The Surat Traffic Police along with Surat RTO is responsible for up-keeping of the e-Challan system and proper functioning of the same. Through this system, the challan system has been digitised, minimizing corruption and increasing transparency between the commuters and the Traffic Police of Surat.

The e-Challan system in Surat makes the whole challan system digital and corruption free. The e-Challan system works in the following way:

• CCTVs are installed on highways and near traffic signals to monitor vehicles on the roads. If a violation has occurred (No seatbelt, going over the speed limit, etc.) it captures the footage for future.

• This footage is then reviewed by a traffic cop who determines if the violation is legit.

• Similarly e-Challans are also issued by the traffic cops using their hand held devices for violations.

• The violator will be notified through SMS on their registered mobile number of the infringement.

• The violator can then check the status of their e-Challan through the Parivahan web portal or Surat Police Department portal.

• Then, they can either pay the fine online or offline and receive a receipt.

You can check your e-Challan status online in the city of Surat through the Surat Police Department portal or Parivahan portal.

Through Surat Police Department Portal:

• Head over to Surat Police Department Portal.
• Enter your Vehicle Registration Number under “Find e-Challan” section
• You will be redirected to the page where you can see your pending e-Challans

Through Parivahan Website:

• Visit the Parivahan e-Challan Website
• Click on "Check Challan Status"
• Enter your Challan Number/Vehicle Number/Driving Licence Number
• Fill in the Captcha Code and click "Get Detail”
• The system will show any pending challans with payment options

You can also check your e-Challan status through different UPI apps like Gpay, PayTM and also through Surat Municipal Corporation website.

You can pay your e-Challan fines online through various websites in the city of Surat or through mobile apps like PayTM, Gpay or RTO e-Challan app.

Through Parivahan Portal

• Visit the Parivahan e-Challan Website
• Click on "Check Challan Status"
• Enter your Challan Number/Vehicle Number/Driving Licence Number
• Fill in the Captcha Code and click "Get Detail"
• Select the pending e-Challan you want to make payment against
• Pay the fine online through internet banking or debit/credit cards
• Download / Print the receipt if required

Through Surat Police Department Portal:

• Head over to Surat Police Department Portal.
• Enter your Vehicle Registration Number under “Find e-Challan” section
• You will be redirected to the page where you can see your pending e-Challans
• Select the fine you wish to pay.
• Pay using the secure gateway through net banking, debit/credit card, or through UPI.
• Save the receipt if needed.

If you wish to pay e-Challan offline in Surat, you can do so by:

• Paying the fine with cash on the spot at the time when the traffic cop issues an e-Challan through their machine. Make sure to collect the receipt from the traffic cop.
• Take the challan/letter received from the traffic cop to the nearest police station and you can pay the fine there.
• You can also visit the nearest police station along with your driving licence, vehicle registration number and printed copy of e-Challan issued. You can pay your fines there, but make sure to collect a receipt.

• You can also file a complaint by emailing helpdesk-echallan@gov.in.
• You can also file a complaint on the e-Challan website. Provide all the required details in the above mentioned website and select your issue. If they find your information relevant and you are innocent, e-Challan will be cancelled.
• If the authorities do not address your complaint, you can move to court to address your grievances.

In order to avoid getting e-Challans in Surat, one must adhere to all the traffic rules and regulations like:

• Do not drink and drive
• Overtake only from the right side
• Give proper indicators while turning
• Do not use phone while driving
• Follow traffic signals
• Avoid overspeeding
• Give way to emergency vehicles
• Have all the required documents in your vehicle (Registration certificate, PUC, insurance, etc.)
• Use safety gears properly (Seat belts, Helmets)
• Follow traffic cop’s instructions
• Do not park in “No Parking Zones”
• Carry a valid two-wheeler insurance or four-wheeler insurance
• Avoid overloading two-wheelers (1 rider and 1 pillion rider only)

Just like challans, e-Challans are valid throughout the city of Surat. The validity of e-Challan is 60 days from the date of issuance. After this, penalties may become severe and additional fines may be imposed.
