Driving License in Assam

In Assam, it is illegal to drive a motor vehicle without holding a driving license. A driving license is an official document that lets an individual drive his motor vehicle freely in and around the state of Assam. The Regional Transport Authority of Assam is shouldered with the responsibility of issuing driving license in the state. The Assam RTO is also entrusted to issue international driving license, duplicate driving license and provide other driving license related services.

A vehicle insurance policy is mandatory for every vehicle registered at Assam RTO as per The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.

In Assam, to apply for a permanent driving license, an individual has to comply with the below eligibility requirements.

• To apply for a driving license in Assam, an individual should have attained the age of 18 years.
• To apply for a driving license for commercial vehicle, an individual should have attained the age of 20 years.
• To apply for a driving license for motor vehicle not exceeding 50cc, an individual should have attained the age of 16 years.
• The applicant should hold a valid learner’s license.
• The applicant can apply for a permanent DL in Assam after 30 days or within 180 days from the date of issuance of the learner’s license.

In the state of Assam, a driving license is issued on the basis of the driving license test conducted as per the rule 15 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Here’s how you can apply for a driving license online in Assam:

• Visit parivahan.gov.in
• Click on ‘online’
• Select the state name-Assam
• Click on ‘Apply online’ and then select ‘new driving license’ and then click on continue
• Enter your learner’s license number and date of birth
• You can then fill the form and submit it online
• You can proceed ahead with uploading the documents, your photo and signature and paying the fees online (you’ll have to check if this facility is applicable for your state).
• Take print out of all the documents submitted
• An application number will be generated
• You will then have to visit the RTO with your original documents.
• On verification of the documents, you will have to book a slot for your driving license test.

• Visit the nearest RTO office
• Collect the application form
• Fill the form and submit it with the relevant documents to the RTO office.
• Pay the application fees
• Once the documents are verified, get your DL slot booked and then appear for the test on the scheduled date and time.

In the state of Assam, a driving license issued for a private vehicle is valid for 20 years or until the age of 50, while a driving license issued for a commercial vehicle is valid for 3 years from the date of issuance. On expiry of the driving license, an applicant has to renew it to be able to freely drive his vehicle on roads in Assam. Also, the renewal of the driving license has to be done within 30 days from the date of expiry. If the applicant does not renew the DL within the grace period of 30 days, then an additional fee is applicable.

• On verification of the documents, the renewed DL will be issued to the applicant .

In Assam, driving license test is a mandatory process that an applicant is required to go through to avail a driving license.
