Driving License in Tripura

Obtaining a driving license in Tripura is essential if you want to drive your vehicle freely in the state. In India, the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 makes it essential for a vehicle owner to hold a driving license to drive his vehicle on Indian roads. The Motor Vehicles Department of Tripura is formed under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 to implement various provisions of the act, while also building an efficient and effective public transport system in the state. The Regional Transport Authority of Tripura has issued the below list of eligibility requirements for an individual to comply with to obtain a DL in the state.

• An applicant has to be above the age of 16 years and should obtain consent from his parents/guardian to be eligible to drive a vehicle without gear, with an engine capacity not exceeding 50cc.
• An applicant has to be above 18 years to be eligible to obtain a permanent driving license in Tripura.
• The applicant should be above the age of 20 years to be eligible to obtain a license for driving transport vehicles.
• Applicant should be conversant with traffic rules and regulations.

In Tripura, an applicant can apply for a driving license after 30 days or within 180 days from the date of issuance of the learner’s license.

Online application Process for Obtaining DL in Tripura

Applying for a driving license in Tripura is an easy process as you can now apply for it online through parivahan.gov.in, the Ministry Of Road Transport and Highways website.

You will have to follow the below steps for the online procedure:

• Visit parivahan.gov.in
• Click on ‘online services’ and select ‘driving license related services’.
• Select the name of your state-Tripura
• Click on ‘apply online’ and then on ‘new driving license’ and then click on continue
• Fill the applicant details and upload documents
• You can also upload your photo and signature online, but you will have to check whether this facility is applicable for Tripura.
• You can also book a slot for your DL test online (This facility is only applicable for few states, check if you can book the slot)
• Then pay the application fees.
• An application number will be generated which you will require when you visit the RTO for verification of the documents.
• Take a printout of all the documents uploaded

You can also download the application form online through Tripura Governments transport website-tsu.trp.nic.in/transport/public/forms.aspx Once you have applied for the DL online, you will then have to visit the RTO along with the copies of your original documents. If you could not book the driving license test slot online, then you will have to book it at the RTO and then appear for the DL test.

Offline Application Process for Obtaining DL in Tripura

If you do not wish to apply for a DL online in Tripura, then you can directly visit the RTO and apply there.

• Visit the nearest RTO office.
• Collect the application form
• Fill the form and attach all the relevant documents along with.
• Pay the application fees and book a slot for your DL test.
• Appear for the DL test on the given date and time.

If you pass the test, your DL will be issued to you via speed post. If you fail the test, you can reappear for the test.

Driving license issued for a private vehicle in the state of Tripura is valid for 20 years or until the age of 50. A driving license issued for a commercial vehicle is valid for 3 years. An applicant has to renew his DL issued in Tripura within 30 days from the date of expiry.

Procedure for applying for renewal of driving license in Tripura:

For renewal of driving license in Tripura, an applicant will have to follow the below process:

The applicant can apply for renewal of DL in Tripura through parivahan.gov.in or can directly visit the RTO and apply for the same or can even download the form online tsu.trp.nic.in/transport/public/forms.aspx. The applicant will have to submit the original documents to the RTO office, post which, on verification, he will be issued the renewed DL within few days.

Driving license test procedure in Tripura is conducted as per Rule 15 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. A DL test is conducted in the presence of a Motor vehicle Inspector who decides if the applicant is competent to receive the DL. The applicant has to carry his own vehicle for the test and the vehicle should be of the same class that he is availing the license for. While appearing for the test, the applicant will have to drive his vehicle and will also be asked several questions related to traffic rules and regulations.
