Road transport is one of the most commonly used modes of commute in Tripura. To ensure that the roads are always maintained in a good condition, the government levies road tax - utilizing the proceeds for the upkeep and development of public roads.
The Tripura Transport Department acts as a regulatory authority for the movement of vehicles in the state. The responsibilities concerning the levying and administration of road tax in the state is vested with the Tripura Transport Department.
A car insurance policy is mandatory for every vehicle registered at Tripura RTO as per The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.

Road tax payable for old vehicles is 50% of one-time tax for 5 years. For vehicles from other states that have to be assigned to the state of Tripura, the rate will be 100% above the road tax for the same vehicle category for every 5 years.

Road tax is payable by vehicle owners during the time of registration of a vehicle - either on a yearly basis or once in a lifetime - depending on the vehicle type. Individuals can pay their road tax by visiting a regional transport office (RTO). For making the payment, users will be required to fill up certain forms. Yes. All owners of vehicles are mandatorily required to pay their road tax on time.
How is road tax calculated?
Road tax is calculated by taking into account the vehicle's age, cost, date of registration, engine capacity and seating capacity. The purpose that the vehicle serves and the place where it was manufactured are also taken into consideration while determining the rate of road tax.
How to check the tax amount applicable from the website of the Transport Department of Tripura?
To find out the amount of tax applicable, an individual will need to click on the 'Tax Assessment and Penalty calculation' on the website of the Transport Department of Tripura. Following this, select the relevant transport office and enter the vehicle's registration number to view details of the tax applicable.
When did the government revise the rates on road tax applicable on different categories of vehicles?
The revised rates of road tax on different categories of vehicles, except three wheelers, came into effect on 1st July 2018. The road tax applicable on three wheelers remains the same as notified on 24.10.2011.
Is the road tax applicable same for every state in India?
