The Greater Mumbai RTO department was founded to ensure the execution of provisions under section 213 (1) of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The Greater Mumbai Transport Department ensures the regulatory of road transport and safety related matters such as conducting a driving test before issuance of the license, issuance of Driving License (DL), registration of vehicles, issuance of permits to the vehicle etc. Greater Mumbai RTO includes areas such as Fort, Masjid, Girgaon, Colaba, Churchgate, Nariman Point, Kalbadevi and others.
A motor insurance policy is mandatory for every vehicle registered at Greater Mumbai RTO as per The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.
