Kozhikode RTO was established to carry out the provisions made under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Kozhikode RTO also looks after the development and changes in the Road Transport Technology, the pattern of passenger and freight movements, development of road networks in the state and particularly the improved techniques in the motor vehicles management.
The Kozhikode RTO is headed by the Transport Commissioner and operates under the guidance of Transport Department of Kerala.
A car insurance policy is mandatory for every vehicle registered at Kozhikode RTO as per The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.
