Mumbai (East) RTO is established under the provisions of section 2131(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The regional transport office of Mumbai (East) comes under the Maharashtra State Vehicles Department. Mumbai (East) RTO aims at providing a safe and effective public transport system and its primary jobs include registration of vehicles, grant and renewal of permits, collection of road taxes and others. Mumbai (East) RTO is headed by a transport commissioner whose job is to ensure swift implementation of various road safety measures. Localities such as Kurla, Sakinaka, Vikhroli, Powai, Mulund, Ghatkopar and others are a part of the Mumbai (East) RTO.
A car insurance policy is mandatory for every vehicle registered at Mumbai (East) RTO as per The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.
